The small building is located on Darwin Street, iconic for Kharkiv – located on the slope of the central part of the city and actually beyond the then boundary of the city’s development. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, the street was formed by low-rise buildings of private estates in the style of neoclassicism, eclecticism, and art nouveau. Later interventions of the Soviet period partly changed the scale of the building, its function, and the general image. The reconstructed building is located in front of the constructivist 5-story complex of the Research Institute of Metals, built in the 1920s and 1930s, and creates a transition zone from the low-rise buildings at the front of the street to the increased height in the depth of the site. Also, due to a somewhat more restrained facade with neoclassical and neo-baroque elements, the plastic saturation of the environment along the front of the building “dissolves”, gradually transitioning to the strict geometrical volumes of the building of the Research Institute of Metals.
